A variety of mission-trip experiences exist within the Diocese of Madison and through HMC. The basic form of mission trip we promote is "Love Begins Here" (LBH), a diocesanwide and relatively inexpensive week of service camp that ties in nicely with other youth programs of our diocese—including Camp Gray and diocesan youth rallies. Among other things, LBH has programs for both Middle School (Grades 6-8) and High School. See below!
Occasionally, HMC also offers some "homegrown" mission opportunities, particularly for older high-schoolers. These take a substantial amount of time, in advanced planning and fundraising; if interested, please inquire with Becky Phillips.
Promotional Video for LBH:
The name “Love Begins Here” is taken directly from a quote by Mother Teresa, who stressed the point that one needn’t travel halfway around the world to be of Christian service to people who have needs. Indeed, love begins at home and in our backyards—love can be local. In that vein, the local mission trips of Love Begins Here take place primarily within the Diocese of Madison. Missionaries serve schools, churches, and organizations that work with eldercare and feeding the hungry.
A typical week includes hands-on service activities (of course!), but also prayer experiences, opportunities to meet new people, and loads of fun! LBH group leaders are commonly Camp Gray alum and local youth ministers of the diocese. Attending LBH is, among other things, a way to spend quality time with all those friends that campers meet at Camp Gray and diocesan youth events.
